Feng Shui Bedroom Planner
Place your bed, door, mirror, window, and other furniture on a simple grid. Get clear, calm guidance based on classical feng shui principles, written for Indian bedrooms.
- Bed is in the commanding position
You can see the door from the bed without lying in its direct line. This is the foundation of bedroom feng shui because it lets the nervous system rest fully.
- Headboard has a solid wall behind
A wall behind the head is the most-recommended placement. Treat it as a backrest for your sleeping self.
- Both sides of the bed are honoured
Two matching side tables symbolise balance, especially in a shared bedroom. Each person has their own surface, lamp, and grounding point.
- Wardrobe is placed off-axis from the bed
Storage placed off the main bed line keeps the sleeping zone clear and the room visually quieter.
- Add one or two living plants
A single low-maintenance plant such as a snake plant or money plant softens corners and quietly cleans the air. Avoid spiky cactus near the bed.
- Add layered lighting
A single ceiling light flattens the room. A bedside lamp or a low corner lamp with a warm bulb (2700K or under) makes wind-down easier and supports natural melatonin.
- Position the rug so it grounds the bed
Move the rug so it slides partly under the bed. The classical placement starts under the bottom of the bed and extends out by one to two feet on each side.
How to use it
- 1Start with the bed, door, and window already placed. Tap on any item to select it, then nudge it with the arrow buttons until it matches your room.
- 2Add more furniture from the palette below. The room is a 12-by-10 grid where each cell is roughly half a metre.
- 3Read the live guidance below the grid. Green ticks are good. Amber alerts suggest a small change to improve flow and rest.
About this tool
Feng shui has a centuries-old vocabulary for how rooms make us feel. Some of that vocabulary lines up neatly with what modern sleep researchers say about clutter, light, and the relationship between the door and the bed. Some of it is purely symbolic.
This planner gives you a tactile way to play with the rules. Move things around. See whether the suggestions feel right. Take what is useful and leave the rest. A good bedroom feels good. That is the only test that really matters.
Frequently asked
What is feng shui?
Feng shui is a Chinese tradition concerned with how the placement of objects affects the flow of chi, which translates loosely as life energy. Bedroom feng shui focuses on rest, intimacy, and recovery, prioritising a sense of safety and calm.
What is the commanding position for a bed?
The commanding position lets you see the door from the bed without lying directly in line with it. Diagonal placement is ideal. The headboard should be against a solid wall for support, ideally not under a window.
Why are mirrors discouraged in bedrooms?
Mirrors are believed to bounce energy around the room and reflect the sleeper, which can cause restlessness. If you have a mirror, place it where it does not directly face the bed, or cover it at night.
Is feng shui scientific?
Feng shui is a cultural and symbolic system, not a scientific one. Some recommendations have intuitive overlaps with sleep hygiene, like keeping the bedroom uncluttered and minimising electronics. Treat the rest as inspiration, not law.
Does this work for vastu shastra?
Vastu shastra is the Indian counterpart to feng shui, and many recommendations overlap. Both prefer a solid wall behind the head, both discourage mirrors facing the bed, and both place value on natural light and ventilation. We are adding a vastu-specific mode in a future update.
